When writing a blog post versus writing a newspaper article, there are various, distinct stylistic guidelines that need to be met in order to communicate messages effectively and appropriately. Both a lover of creative writing and an experienced news writer, I made sure to go into this assignment aware of what type of audience each piece would be reaching, and brainstormed how to best connect with that audience. When writing a blog post, the tone should be informal, and immediately connect with the audience. To accomplish this, I adjusted my voice and language to directly address the reader from the very beginning, by using the word “you” in “no matter how stressed you are.” When writing the blog post, I wrote as if I was talking to a friend and giving advice to someone I care about.
News writing requires more objectivity. I had to take a step back, and put myself into the position of writing something that a student would want to read from the UCSB newspaper, The Current. The news article still needed to be relatable to a student, however written from a more authoritative perspective. Rather than coming from a place of comfort and firsthand experience like my voice in the blog post implied, I adjusted my voice to come from a place of knowledge in health and wellness. I used words such as “At UC Santa Barbara,” to establish a sense of community with the readers as UCSB students. Overall, various changes need to be made when writing in different genres, and the first step is knowing your intended audience and how to successfully capture their attention.
